New Dyson V6 Absolute Cordless Vacuum
We may be on the go a lot between travel and appointments for the boys, but when we’re not running out the door we’re homeschooling, cooking and doing all of the fun things that result in … MESS! Not to mention, we have a golden retriever (shed-city!) and 2 cats. I suffer from horrible allergies and both of my kids have allergies as well–the hubs is less sensitive, but has trouble now and again. With all of that going on as I’m sure you can imagine I vacuum … a lot!
In fact, with 2 boys and a golden I vacuum a couple times a day on the average day we’re home. If I didn’t, we’d be walking through crumbs, sneezing constantly and wearing golden-retriever fur onesies from head to foot! I’d heard a lot of great things about Dyson vacuums, especially for allergy sufferers and pet households, so I was really excited when they offered to send me their new Dyson V6 Absolute Cordless Vacuum.
The new Dyson V6 Absolute Cordless Vacuum is a handheld canister-style vacuum with multiple attachments meant to assist you in cleaning a wide variety of surfaces. This model is meant to be able to pick up both fine dust as well as larger debris such as cereal. Additionally, it utilizes HEPA Filtration to capture allergens and release clean air–filtering out 99.7% of particles that are as small as .3 microns–according to Dyson. The long wand can be removed and attachment heads can be attached directly to the vacuum so that you can easily clean stairs and other surfaces within arm’s reach. In addition to the smaller, typical vacuum attachments this model comes with a soft roller cleaner head and motorized head.
I know there’s a lot of hype out there about different vacuums and I’ve put this one to the test over several weeks, so I’m looking forward to sharing our honest opinions on this particular model for any other boy-filled, heavy-dog-shedding, allergy-suffering households out there looking for the right vacuums to get the job done. I also strongly suggest you visit Dyson’s site dedicated to this model to read more about the technical aspects prior to purchasing.

Dyson V6 Absolute Cordless Vacuum Setup
|Dyson V6 Absolute on Wall-Mount|
Setup wasn’t too bad. The entire vacuum, which arrived in one box, came with a wall-mount, wand, heads, etc. While I left setting the wall-mount up to the hubs, it was pretty easy and not something that required a lot of time or tools. The wall-mount serves as both a storage center and charger, so you will need to place it relatively close to an outlet. Keep in mind, if you want to store the long wand on the wall-mount you will need to place it relatively high off the ground. Also, you cannot store all of the attachments on the wall-mount as it is only meant to hold the actual vacuum and 2 attachments at a time.
I’d also like to mention that our boys nearly lost their minds when we opened up the box and they saw this vacuum. They thought it looked like a futuristic car engine and that really did it for them! Pretty funny. 😉
Dyson V6 Absolute Cordless Vacuum Attachment Use
I’ve had vacuums in the past that were an absolute nightmare to swap out the attachments on. I broke more nails, hurt more fingers on the difficult clips used on many of those vacuums than on almost anything else. Thankfully, the clips on the Dyson V6 Absolute weren’t that difficult to use at all. While I found I sometimes had to apply a bit more pressure than originally expected, the attachments overall were easy to swap on and off without much trouble.

Dyson V6 Absolute Cordless Vacuum Battery Time
When I first read about the battery time on the V6 Absolute I was a little skeptical as to whether or not it would last long enough for vacuuming around our house.
According to Dyson the battery times on this model are as follows:
- 20 minutes normally
- 16 minutes with motorized head
- 6 minutes on boost mode
While I’ve had hardwood floors in the past, our current house is filled with carpet. Miles and miles of carpet! So as you can imagine, that means vacuuming for more than a few minutes at a time unless I’m cleaning up a one-time mess. While I did find that I could do our entire downstairs on the boost mode on a single charge, I found I could not do both our first and second floors without charging between on the boost mode. If not using boost mode, we could almost make it through both floors. I’ll discuss the boost mode below.
Overall, I think based on this limited battery life you have to consider whether or not you tend to vacuum for long periods at a time and whether or not that takes precedence over the ability to have such a mobile, easy to maneuver vacuum.
Dyson V6 Absolute Cordless Vacuum Maneuverability
I have tried vacuums of all shapes and sizes over the years. Of all the vacuums I’ve used I don’t believe I’ve ever found one as lightweight (only 5 lbs for the main bit!) and with such great swiveling in the heads as this one. I’m talking swiveling this vacuum into corners, around on stairs, etc. This thing was great!
I have some back issues and I have not been able to vacuum our stairs easily in years. Usually it’s something I’ve had to ask the hubs to do. This vacuum honestly made it so easy to do. I could quickly take off the long wand, put on whatever attachment I wanted and then vacuum our entire stairs without killing my back or dropping a larger vacuum down the stairs in the process. We used this in our car multiple times as well and found it worked beautifully!
If you’re like us and you have kids that tend to make frequent messes, we found it was easy to grab this vacuum and run it up the stairs to suck up whatever lovely mess had been created in the hallway or in a bedroom. This really came in handy the last 2 weeks while we had the stomach flu going around and little boys were eating saltines in their rooms.
The main handheld vacuum is about the size of a small blender attached to the handle of a drill. The size is great, but I have to say the actual handle was a bit uncomfortable for my hands. I have short fingers, so this may be why. It wasn’t the weight of the vacuum that was the issue, simply the shape of the handle. This may not affect others as the hubs didn’t seem to have an issue. I still used it frequently, but I found that my hand from my thumb to my pointer finger got a little red and sore from the way this sat in my hand during use. Not a huge deal, but worth noting.
Dyson V6 Absolute Cordless Vacuum Suction
We have friends with different Dyson models and they all love them. I often wondered just how much better the suction could really be? I have to say, the first time we used this vacuum we were impressed. Not only did it do a decent job of cleaning the carpets, it took out particles our other vacuum had missed entirely.
We tested it with regular crumbs, cat litter, bits of paper, cereal and dog hair. We were impressed by how well it picked up crumbs and bits of paper–no problem. We were even more impressed when it sucked up cat litter without spraying it out all over the floor like our other vacuum. While it did do a reasonably good job of picking up dog hair, we did find this was the one area it didn’t exceed our expectations. It didn’t leave a ton behind, but it didn’t seem to pick up everything, which may be largely due to the size of the canister and the filter (more on this below).
Overall, we’re mostly impressed with the suction power on this model. The only place we felt it didn’t exceed our expectations was on dog hair, which wouldn’t be an issue if you don’t have a heavy-shedding, long-haired dog like a golden.
Dyson V6 Absolute Cordless Vacuum Boost Mode
The boost mode gives this vacuum some extra oomph and with our golden, we found we needed it. While it did shorten the battery life significantly, we found it also helped pick up more, which we needed. While even with the boost mode in use we did find this vacuum left a little dog hair behind, it picked up the craziest volume of fine particles–super impressive on that front. To engage the boost mode you simply press the “max” button on the back of the handheld vacuum.
Again, if you don’t have a heavy-shedding, long-haired dog the boost mode and suction power on the V6 Absolute is impressive as heck!
Dyson V6 Absolute Cordless Vacuum Canister
As you can see in our picture above, the canister on this vacuum isn’t huge. Granted, since it’s a cordless, handheld vacuum it would make it awkward if it were super large, this is something to take into consideration if your household is a pet household. I doubt it’ll be an issue with cats, but if you have a large, heavy-shedding dog this canister is simply too small to really do a big clean at once. Even vacuuming 1-2 times per day, we found the canister filled up quickly enough that we weren’t able to get through the entire downstairs carpet before having to empty it.
Additionally, if you have a long-haired pet, we found that the hair got a bit knotted up around the filter inside the canister and had to be pulled off when the canister was emptied. Given my allergies, this was not something I could do, so I’ve had to ask the hubs to empty it each time.
Again, if you don’t have a long-haired pet this is a complete non-issue and the canister should be large enough for you to get your vacuuming done in one swoop.
Dyson V6 Absolute Cordless Vacuum Canister for Pets
I know a lot of people want to know what I think of this for pet households. My thoughts? It’s great for short-haired pet households, not my first choice for long-haired pet households. While this did wonderfully picking up cat hair and I was blown away by the fine particles this sucked up–bye-bye pet dander–it seemed to leave a little golden hair behind even when we vacuumed thoroughly. Part of this may be due to the fact that the canister filled so quickly to the fill-line with hair and the hair stuck to the filter, which may have compromised the suction slightly. Either way, if you’re looking for a great vacuum for your household and you have a dog similar to a golden (heavy-, long-haired shedder) this will likely not pick everything up without a lot of extra effort.
If that’s not an issue then I definitely think this would work well for less fur-covered households!
Dyson V6 Absolute Cordless Vacuum Canister Final Thoughts
Overall, we’re very impressed with the suction and ease of use of this vacuum. I think it’s very powerful and incredibly lightweight, making it great for both thorough vacuuming and one-time messes. It can easily be carried from room to room and floor to floor, which is always a plus for a multi-floor home. It’s also easy enough to use that our boys were able to use it without destroying anything in the process–you’d be surprised the destruction that can occur when my guys are given a large, heavy vacuum to clean!
That being said, I did find that it wasn’t totally suited to the kind of pet household we have. While it worked beautifully around our cats, it did leave a bit of golden retriever hair around even with several passes. Also, the canister was a bit too petite to handle the healthy dose of retriever hair we suck up on a daily basis.
Ultimately, I think this vacuum is great for a number of reasons and believe it could potentially work for the majority of households looking for a strong, easy-to-use cordless vacuum. If you don’t plan to spend more than the allotted amount of time mentioned above vacuuming you won’t even notice that it has a limited battery life. And let’s be serious, unless you have a long-haired dog you probably don’t have to vacuum for that long each day anyway!
All in all, we think it’s a great model and hopefully we’ve given you some food for thought if you’re currently in the market for a new vacuum to clean up after your little ADHDers.
