Spending the holidays at The Ritz-Carlton Denver

If you want to skip right to our time at The Ritz-Carlton Denver start at 1:26 in the video above for a view of the interior of the hotel, a room tour and a peak at the evening cocoa reception the boys got to enjoy!

Happy 2017, guys! We’re so excited that our first post of the year will be about our last trip of 2016, which was fantastic. It’s taken me a little longer than usual to get this up largely due to the holidays and the fact I’ve had the flu since Christmas, but it’s up and I hope you find it helpful if you plan to travel to Denver in the near future!

If you follow us on Instagram then you already know we recently went to Denver to explore the city and see some family for the holidays. Believe it or not, that was actually the boys’ first trip to Denver and they were extremely excited to see their cousins, the Rockies and check out what the city had to offer!

The Ritz-Carlton Denver, a gorgeous hotel located in downtown Denver, offered a prime location and fabulous amenities during our recent trip to Denver. We generally don’t know what to expect when it comes to hotels located in large cities. We’ve stayed at quite a few over the years and often they’re
cramped, staff can be stuffy and many are geared more towards business
travelers than families. However, we found that while The Ritz-Carlton Denver didn’t
have any kid-specific programs, they seemed to be very family-friendly, warm and inviting.

From spacious rooms to a delicious evening cocoa reception in the lobby (much to the boys delight), our stay at The Ritz-Carlton Denver was definitely among our top city hotel stays in 2016!

The Ritz-Carlton Denver at a glance:

  • Located in Downtown Denver corridor
  • Easy walking distance to dining and shopping
  • ELWAY’S signature steak house (named after Denver Broncos quarterback)
  • Denver’s longest running AAA Five Diamond Property
  • Large guest rooms starting at 540 sq. ft. (very large for city rooms in our experience)
  • Oversized tubs
  • Rainforest shower heads
  • Cappuccino/coffee/tea maker in room
  • 24-hour in-room dining available
  • Transportation available to and from Denver Airport (fee applies, must be scheduled in advance)
  • In-and-out valet service (fee applies: $50 overnight or $30 for the day at the time of this post)
  • 4 p.m. Check-in; Noon check-out
  • Pet-friendly for well-mannered dogs ($125 per-pet, per-stay fee applies)

We loved that The Ritz-Carlton Denver was pet-friendly and had we been able to bring Shadow along (our golden) he would have enjoyed Denver quite a bit as the city overall was very dog-friendly, but sadly he wasn’t able to come on this trip. Maybe someday!

You can book your stay or learn more on The Ritz-Carlton Denver’s site.

For those that like to explore when they travel, The Ritz-Carlton Denver
made it easy to venture out on foot with the boys to explore that part
of downtown Denver. The food options nearby were fabulous–we highly
recommend you check out Crave Real Burgers at some point (a family
favorite from our stay)–and there was plenty of shopping. We were even able to walk over to the
Christkindl Market one night, which was filled with delicious and pretty
things to wade through. While we had a car with us during our stay, had we stayed in downtown Denver only we could have easily gotten around without the use of it from our hotel. Definitely an ideal home base while visiting Denver! We also found we were centrally located enough to make driving to other parts of Denver pretty easy.

Hotel Layout

The layout of The Ritz-Carlton Denver was traditional in nature. The valet parking area was just under an elevated walkway between buildings across the street from one another and the main doors opened up into the lobby. From the lobby guests could get to the spa, ELWAY’S or elevators that went up to the guest rooms. The elevators were very quick and we rarely had to wait for more than a minute or two, even in the evening. Elevators did require a key card to use, which is a security measure we always appreciate.

Guest Room First Impression

Our guest room was far more spacious than we anticipated for a city hotel! Generally, we find we’re practically crawling over beds (and each other) to get from one end of the room to the other when we visit big metros, but this room had plenty of space to spread out in. In addition to two queens our room had a sitting area, desk, bureau with a flat screen TV, ample closet, cappuccino/coffee/tea maker, large bathroom with separate water closet and an in-room safe. The window in our room was nice and large and gave us a great view of the city below (and provided some fabulous light for me to do my makeup each day).

Overall, our room was very comfortable for our family of four and I think it would work for many families around that size. You could potentially do a third child if the child was a baby, but it would really depend on how much room your particular family is most comfortable with.  The main area of the room was carpeted, the hall/entryway had wood floors and the bathroom was tiled, so you’d want to watch little bitty ones that tend to run as the floor in the bathroom in particular was hard (R.I.P. a bottle of my favorite face oil that I lost to the floor during our stay).

I’d say the only thing that wasn’t particularly easy to do was eat in our room when we brought food back and that’s only because I prefer to eat at a table and not on the beds, but it wasn’t unworkable by any means–just not my particular preference. Still, small price to pay for such a large room in a busy city!

The 2 Queen Beds

It’s always nice when a hotel offers a mattress that makes sleep easy! The Ritz-Carlton Denver’s beds were very comfortable and true queens in size, not doubles being passed as queens (not to name names, but we’ve seen this at a handful of places we’ve stayed over the years). The sheets were fairly soft, comforters were nice and plush (and warm) and overall we slept well during our stay!

The Sitting Area

We love when hotel rooms give you more seating options than just your beds! We find it’s a great way to to give certain little people space from each other during downtime, even when we’re in a guest room with this type of all-in-one-room floor plan. Let’s be honest, not every moment is Instagram-worthy and sometimes little people need some space! ?

The Desk & TV

As we mentioned above, our room also had a desk and bureau with a flat screen. While we try to do as little regular work as possible while away, sometimes it can’t be helped! Needless to say, while there was nothing particularly remarkable to mention about either, they both served their purposes well and we got a bit of work done at one while the boys enjoyed some episodes of Full House on the other.

Note: The cash bar was on top of the bureau with some additional items by the cappuccino/coffee/tea bar in the entryway. Make sure to let your little guys know what is and is not off limits before you end up with a bit of an extra room charge in gummy bears and chocolates. ?

The Closet

The closet in our room was between the entryway and the main sleeping area. It was large enough to store some of our luggage, but not all, which was fine because our room was spacious enough that we were able to store suitcases in other areas without tripping all over them. This was also where the in-room safe was located.

Note: The in-room safe was very shallow and not large enough for me to store my DSLR in it (we find some are and some aren’t), but could fit two slim laptops in it if propped on their sides.

The Cappuccino/Coffee/Tea Bar

This may sound really funny, but the first person to scope out what kind of coffee machine we have in our room is our oldest. He has a particular love for Nespresso machines, is moderately happy with a K-Cup machine and is indifferent to traditional coffee machines. While our boys are only allowed to drink decaf drinks because of their ages, he really enjoys making everyone a hot beverage at the beginning and/or end of each day. This habit started years ago and we’ve kind of gone with it because busy guys tend to be the happiest guys in our family! I will say, he makes a pretty great Nespresso cappuccino or french press cup of coffee at 10 and his long-term goal is to be a chef that owns his own restaurant so he’s on his way!

Much to his delight our room had a complimentary Nespresso machine stocked with a handful of different beverage options. There were also a few cash-bar items on the shelf above, so make sure you double-check.

The Bathroom

The bathroom in our room was very spacious with a separate standing shower, water closet, double-vanity and soaking tub. While we can make a variety of bathroom configurations work for our family, this is definitely one of our preferred setups. This way, people can get ready for the day or for bed without necessarily having to wait for others. I should also point out that the boys like to review every soaking tub we come across and they thoroughly enjoyed this one! Two thumbs up from them. ??

Just a quick note, the toiletries provided by The Ritz-Carlton Denver smelled delicious–just thought you’d like to know!

The View

As you can see in our video (coming soon), our view of the city was quite pretty and the boys enjoyed their birds-eye view during our downtime!

The Welcome

Nothing starts a stay off quite like a lovely welcome reception in your room! We really appreciated that our welcome from The Ritz-Carlton Denver included a number of savory local items in addition to a sweet treat from the kitchen. Unfortunately, because I’m allergic to wheat, I wasn’t able to try the cupcakes or a few other things, but the boys and Patrick said they were delicious. Seamus actually ate the majority of the nut and cracker mixes and everyone loved the beef jerky and fruit.

Thank you again, Ritz-Carlton Denver!

The Valet Parking

Valet parking at The Ritz-Carlton Denver was one of the fastest we’ve experienced–especially in a city hotel. They were able to retrieve our car very quickly with barely any wait and they were super courteous and friendly–so much of Denver was incredibly friendly! One gentleman in particular at valet helped us throughout the majority of our stay and I wish I could remember his name because he made sure we felt very welcomed each time we returned from a day out. Great service, guys!

The Evening Cocoa Reception

I’m assuming this was special for the holidays and I’m sure there’s a different type of reception otherwise, but the lovely cocoa station in the lobby each evening was such a nice touch! In addition to regular cocoa, the station had a number of treats to mix into your cocoa such as chocolate drops, crushed candy cane, etc. all served up to your specifications by a delightful staff member. There was even alcohol that could be added to adult cocoas! While Patrick and I didn’t partake in any the boys thoroughly enjoyed their custom cocoas each evening we were there–one evening on our way back from a day of exploring and one evening on our way out to visit the Christkindl Market. Such a great touch!

Final Thoughts on The Ritz-Carlton Denver

As I’m sure you can already tell, we really enjoyed our time at The Ritz Carlton Denver! Our room was extremely spacious, staff was very friendly and the location couldn’t be beat. We had a very comfortable stay that we look forward to repeating next time we’re in the area!

The front desk was extremely helpful and attentive, which was great. We had several things delivered by Postmates during our stay and the front desk was wonderful with orchestrating delivery to our room.

We did have one incident with the area around the side of our couch not having been vacuumed thoroughly enough before our arrival, but housekeeping quickly came up and took care of it.

One piece of advice we would share with anyone visiting Denver is to drink plenty of water, consider bringing a travel humidifier and prepare for the dryness in the air. The weather in New England is very dry in winter, but Denver was even dryer!

Denver is a huge city and as such there were some areas we could easily travel to on foot and others we had to drive to. Downtown Denver was definitely a fun area to explore and if your family likes to get out and check out new places on foot I’d definitely recommend staying downtown.

Thanks for a great stay, The Ritz-Carlton Denver!

What a gorgeous room! My step-brother lives out that way so I'll tell my step mom to check it out the next time she visits him – she always stays in a hotel!

Love the Ritz Carlton, they know how to do it right. Just the little things like the sweet treats makes you feel special. Love the room size and of course, the robe just adds to the experience.

Oh my what a wonder place to spend sometime. I have stayed at some great places but from your photos nothing as nice as this. Everything looks beautiful and made for comfort. I might never come out of that shower.

Every Ritz Carlton I've ever stayed in has always been above and beyond most hotels. The special touches like the cocoa bar makes it even more enjoyable. Glad you enjoyed your stay.

The room is gorgeous! I wouldn't mind staying there, lol. But what I really want? That bathtub! Most hotels just have the walk in showers. I love a good soak!
