8 Bits of Shower Fun!
Cue the music! You know which theme song we’re talking about. Time to 1-Up your shower routine!
If you know us well then you know that we’re a gaming family. Patrick games, I game and both boys game! While I suppose my first gaming console was technically an Atari that belonged to my parents, the first console I received as my own was The Nintendo Entertainment System or NES for my birthday as just a tiny gamer … often referred to as the Classic NES by the younger generations just discovering what is still one of my favorite consoles of all time! Eventually the Super NES was released and my younger brother got that console for his birthday. We played Nintendo as often as our parents allowed us to, eventually burning out my original NES, which resulted in the purchase of a replacement!
As soon as our kiddos were old enough to play, we introduced them to the marvels of Mario Bros. Having two kiddos, they quickly fell in love with Mario and Luigi, each adopting one as their favorite—just as my brother and I did back in the day. To this day, the Mario Bros. games tend to be among their favorites!
When I first heard that Shu Uemura (one of my favorite Japanese beauty lines to be sold in the U.S.) would be doing a Super Mario Bros collection for the holidays I nearly fell out of my chair! I’m a sucker for anything themed with my favorite games, movies, etc. and since many of my favorites are Japanese, it’s not often a collab hits the states that I can purchase directly and enjoy.
While I knew I’d be a fan of this collection, I also knew the boys would be jumping out of their little socks to get their hands on the hair care portion of the launch (as the majority of the rest was beauty and not something either boy would be interested in).
When our samples arrived in the mail, Patrick and the boys hovered around as I opened the box and pulled each Super Mario Bros. 8-bit themed item out one by one. I don’t think I’ve ever seen them so excited by shampoo and conditioner (though Patrick does get fairly excited by finding his favorite Japanese styling products here in the states).
If you’re familiar with Shu Uemura, you’re familiar with their simple packaging silhouettes—fuss-free bottles that get beautifully designed wraps for special collabs such as this one.
I should note that while this collection is referred to as Shu Uemura x Super Mario Bros. none of the hair care packaging includes Luigi, whose appearance has changed quite a bit of the years, but who made his appearance alongside Mario in Super Mario Bros. In addition to Mario, Princess Peach, flying fish and squid made appearances on the packaging in all their 8-bit glory!
We received the Cleansing Oil Shampoo, Cleansing Oil Conditioner, Essence Absolue nourishing protective oil and Master Wax high control workable cream. If you’re familiar with Shu, then you know that healthy cleansing oils play a big part in their skin and hair care lines, which I’ve always found to be fantastic, even with my finicky, sensitive skin!
Prices: $39-$69 (varies based on product/size)

As usual, the scents were really lovely and this particular line was more unisexual in fragrance compared to other collabs I’ve tried in the past, in my opinion. To be honest, as long as a scent isn’t something anyone considers “gross”, nobody here minds if things are floral or somewhat feminine anyway. These guys may be picky about some things, but that isn’t often one of them when it comes to hair care!
How They Work
Everything worked really nicely for each of us! As a multi-racial family, the majority of us have texture Asian hair, Patrick has curly hair and we all have sensitive scalps. It can be really hard to find products that work for all of us, but thankfully Shu Uemura did a wonderful job with these.
The shampoo and conditioner cleansed and left our hair soft and healthy—not dry and dull.
Believe it or not, we all use oil in our hair on a regular basis and we found the Essence Absolue nourishing protective oil to work quite well. It gave hair a little extra luster, but didn’t leave it greasy feeling or looking.
Patrick has not yet given the Master Wax a full-day trial, but he did try it really quickly when it first arrived and he said it felt incredibly similar to his preferred daily styling wax/putty. I’ll report back after he’s had a chance to give it a really good try!
I’m sure you can already tell that we’re in love with this collection! The packaging was beyond adorable (especially if you’re an old school gaming fan) and the quality was everything you’d expect from Shu Uemura. My one regret with this collection was that I haven’t had a chance to try any of the beauty items yet! They’re all so cute and really worth checking out if you’re a Nintendo fan.
Keep in mind, Shu Uemura is a high-end brand and the prices of their products reflect this. Overall, I’d say this collection is worth the splurge if you know your family will enjoy using the products as much as collecting the packaging!
